Washing machine not spinning: why is laundry still wet?

The machine finishes washing but the laundry stays far too wet — the problem is in the spin stage. The machine either never starts spinning or the drum doesn't reach the right speed. Causes range from simple (uneven load, incomplete draining) to technical (belt, bearings, motor, tacho sensor).

Why does it not spin?

One of the most common causes is water not draining fully — with water left, the machine won't spin for safety, so spin problems often come together with drainage (filter, pump) problems. Another is an unbalanced load: heavy items on one side make the machine lower or stop the spin to reduce vibration.

More technical causes: a snapped or slipping drive belt, worn drum bearings, worn motor brushes, or a faulty tacho (speed) sensor. Then the drum either doesn't turn or turns loudly and unevenly.

What can you safely check at home?

Redistribute the load evenly and try the spin cycle again. Then check the drain filter and hose — if water doesn't fully drain, spin won't start. Note that a very small load (a single blanket) can also unbalance the machine.

What you should NOT do

Do not open the back or top panel to work on the belt, bearings or motor, and do not force the drum by hand. Bearing and motor repair needs special tools and experience.

The 166 Usta solution

A 166 Usta washing machine technician first checks full draining and load balance, then the technical parts: belt, motor and brushes, bearings, shock absorbers and tacho sensor, finally testing spin at different speeds.

What is clarified during diagnosis?

The technician checks the drum turning freely, the belt condition, noise from the bearings, the motor brushes and the speed sensor signal, because "won't spin" can come from a simple drain issue or heavy mechanical failure.

FAQ

Why is laundry so wet after washing?

Usually incomplete draining and an unbalanced load. Cleaning the filter and spreading the load evenly often fixes it.

What if the drum doesn't turn at all?

If the drum doesn't turn at all, the belt has likely snapped or there is a motor/brush problem — this needs technical work.

When should I call 166 Usta?

If draining is clear and the load balanced but it still won't spin, or there is loud knocking during spin, contact a washing machine technician. See our blog.
