The room is cold. You raise the thermostat setting, but the boiler stays quiet and the radiators remain cold. This does not automatically mean the thermostat is broken. A heating schedule, weak batteries or a lost receiver connection may be responsible; sometimes the boiler itself cannot start. If basic checks do not help, a combi boiler technician can establish where the heating request stops reaching its destination.
A thermostat compares the measured room temperature with your chosen temperature. If the room is already warm enough, not starting the boiler is normal. Check whether the number on the display is the current temperature or the target. On some models, a flame symbol means that heat has been requested, rather than confirming that the boiler burner is actually running.
A short delay after changing the setting does not necessarily indicate a fault either. Controls may include a model-specific delay. Allow the time described in the manual instead of repeatedly changing settings and making the symptoms harder to follow.
The thermostat may be in holiday, economy or off mode. A power interruption can also affect its clock or schedule. If the boiler is in summer mode, hot water may still work while radiator heating is disabled. Check the operating mode of both devices.
On battery-powered thermostats, an illuminated display does not always rule out weak batteries. Wireless systems usually have a separate receiver near the boiler. Moving the thermostat, thick walls and metal obstacles can affect communication. Receiver power and pairing also need checking. Local radio communication is different from Wi-Fi: losing internet access does not stop local heating control on every model.
A thermostat close to a radiator, sunny window or heat-producing appliance may measure a warmer spot than the rest of the room. The display shows a high temperature while the seating area remains cold. Positioning should follow the manufacturer's instructions. Do not disconnect and relocate a wired thermostat yourself.
If the problem started after a new thermostat was installed, compatibility and wiring need checking. Volt-free contacts, powered outputs and digital controls are not interchangeable. A technician should inspect wiring, relays and the boiler control input. A boiler fault or pressure below the range specified in its manual can also prevent heating. Working hot water does not prove that the thermostat is the only possible cause.
Before contacting 166 Usta, gather the following information without opening either appliance:
Do not bridge thermostat wires to force the boiler on, open electrical covers or attempt random pairing sequences. Repeated resets can erase useful fault information. If you smell gas, stop troubleshooting, avoid operating electrical switches or creating a flame, and contact the emergency gas service from a safe location.
A prolonged fault leaves the home cold. Continually raising the target temperature will not repair it; once communication returns, an unusually high setting may overheat the room. Restore your normal setting after checking.
Have the boiler and thermostat makes and models ready, along with whether the control is wired or wireless. Take photos of the display and error code. Explain whether the issue followed a battery replacement, power cut or new installation. Report whether hot water works and which receiver lights are visible. These details help direct the diagnosis and avoid unnecessary part replacements.
The check follows the heating request from the thermostat through the receiver and connections to the boiler's response. The aim is to locate the cause before deciding which component needs attention. The proposed work is explained to you, and thermostat control and the heating response are checked after the intervention.
