Does the breaker trip when you switch on the kettle or electric oven while the boiler is running? The last appliance switched on is not necessarily the cause. Combined circuit load, an appliance fault or earth leakage can trigger protection. If this happens repeatedly, an electrician should identify which protective device operated and why.
The 24 or 28 kW rating on a gas combi boiler describes heat output, not the electrical power drawn from the mains. Electricity mainly runs the pump, fan and controls. Check the model’s technical documentation for its electrical requirements. A boiler that heats electrically is different and may represent a much larger electrical load.
So a trip when the kettle starts alongside a gas boiler does not automatically mean the boiler is drawing too much power. The electrician needs to establish what else shares the circuit and assess the actual load.
A kettle, electric oven, portable heater and washing machine during water heating can create a substantial combined demand. Separate sockets may belong to the same circuit. Moving an appliance to another socket therefore may not distribute the load. An overload can cause a delayed trip, but timing alone is not a diagnosis.
A damaged cable, an internal short circuit or insulation failure can also cause disconnection. Loose connections create a separate overheating risk; do not assume a breaker will always detect this in time. Stop using connections with a burning smell, discolouration or melting.
A standard MCB responds to overcurrent and short circuits, while an RCD/RCCB responds to residual current. An RCBO combines both protections. Leakage currents from several appliances can add together when they operate simultaneously. Not every trip with several appliances running is an overload.
Stop the recently switched-on appliances. Unplug only where the plug and socket are dry, intact and safely accessible. Note which appliances were operating and whether the trip occurred immediately or later. Do not repeatedly reset the breaker or deliberately recreate the fault; leave the suspect circuit off.
Do not group high-power appliances on one extension lead or connect extension leads together. Using appliances at different times may reduce demand, but does not prove a fault has been repaired. Find information on inspections and other services on the 166 Usta home page.
Opening a circuit to protect it is the breaker’s normal function. A burnt casing or scorched panel is not. If there is a burning smell, crackling, smoke or melting at the panel, do not approach it to test the switch. Stop using the affected installation and keep people away. If there is smoke or fire, move to safety and contact emergency services. Never pour water on electrical equipment.
Fitting a higher-rated breaker simply to prevent trips is dangerous. The breaker must suit the cable it protects. Increasing its rating without checking conductor size, installation conditions and circuit condition can increase overheating and fire risk.
List the appliances and models running together, and say whether the boiler heats with gas or electricity. Note whether the whole home or only one area lost power. A photo of a visible label may help, taken from a safe distance without opening the panel. Mention any scorching or burning smell when booking. Do not remove covers or work on wiring and terminals.
The electrician assesses the protective device, circuit loading, cable condition and connections. Appropriate measurements help distinguish overload, insulation faults and appliance problems. Depending on the findings, the work may involve restoring a connection, replacing a faulty component or installing a suitable dedicated circuit.
On-site diagnosis, an explanation of the proposed work and checks after repair are central to the service. The scope is agreed after inspection. If an internal boiler fault is found, the appropriate specialist can be recommended.
