Does your combi boiler stop when you open a hot tap, leaving the water cold? First distinguish what “switching off” means: do the radiators stop heating, does the flame symbol disappear, or does the display go completely blank? These are different symptoms. If hot water fails repeatedly, a combi boiler technician should check the appliance’s response to hot-water demand.
Most combi boilers give hot water priority. Opening a tap redirects heat from the radiators to domestic hot water. The interruption to radiator heating does not mean the boiler has failed. A brief transition pause may also occur. Once the tap closes, the appliance returns to heating if there is still a heating demand.
However, cold water while the tap remains open, a flame that starts and quickly disappears, or a fault code should not be dismissed as normal switching. A completely blank display is a different symptom again.
A flow sensor detects water being drawn from the tap. If flow falls below the model’s required minimum, or the sensor signal is unreliable, hot-water operation may fail to start or stop prematurely. If only one tap is affected, a restriction at that outlet also needs checking. If all taps are affected, the incoming supply and the boiler’s hot-water components should be assessed together.
Deposits in a heat exchanger, poor internal circulation or an incorrect temperature-sensor reading can lead to a protective shutdown. A technician should check temperature behaviour and the fault history before deciding that cleaning or sensor replacement is necessary.
On models with a diverter valve, a sticking valve may prevent heat reaching the intended circuit. It does not always cause the entire appliance to switch off. If a flame starts and immediately goes out, ignition and flame supervision also need examination. If the display goes blank, the electrical supply and controls require a separate investigation.
Note whether another tap supplies hot water and whether the hot-water symbol appears when a tap opens. Photograph the fault code and displayed pressure. The boiler gauge indicates heating-circuit pressure, which is different from mains-water pressure at the tap; one does not establish the other.
Limit checks to those permitted in the user manual. Do not open the casing, dismantle sensors or gas components, bypass protection or repeatedly reset the appliance. If you smell gas, do not operate electrical switches; leave the area and contact the emergency service from a safe place. Information on routine repair services is available on the 166 Usta home page.
Water suddenly cooling and reheating can make showering uncomfortable and create a scalding risk. Resetting repeated protective shutdowns does not remove the cause. Stop using the appliance and arrange an inspection if there is water leakage, a burning smell or an unusual noise.
Provide the make, model, fault code and when the problem started. Note whether the radiators work, whether every tap is affected and whether the display stays on. A short video taken from a safe position can show the transition. Clear access to the boiler without dismantling any parts yourself.
The technician checks hot-water demand, flow, temperature changes and the appliance’s signals. The findings determine whether the flow sensor, heat exchanger, valve, ignition system or electrical components need attention. The proposed work and any necessary part are explained in advance. Hot-water and heating operation are checked after repair.
On-site diagnosis and a final check help distinguish different causes of the same symptom. The scope and price are agreed once the appliance’s condition is established.
