You pull the sofa out into a bed, but it stops halfway: one side moves while the other catches. Sometimes it opens normally but will not fold away again. The cause may be as simple as trapped fabric, or it may involve a loose joint or bent metal part. If it keeps happening, a furniture repair technician should inspect both the mechanism and its attachments to the frame.
Pulling harder or pressing down to force it shut can make the damage worse. Start by noting where movement stops and whether an obstruction is visible.
A hanging blanket, cushion, toy or item from the storage compartment can obstruct the moving parts. On some models, a thick mattress topper or bedding left inside prevents the bed from folding away. Consider this if the sofa only resists the final stage of closing. Which items need removing before operation depends on the model’s instructions.
Pulling from one corner, an unstable foot or a frame that has shifted during a move may cause the mechanism to travel at an angle. On models with rollers and tracks, one side may come out first while the other rubs or catches. Not every sofa has rollers or tracks: the diagnosis must match its particular mechanism.
With use, bolted joints can develop play, pivots can wear and attachment points in the frame can become damaged. The mechanism may then move out of alignment and catch in the same place each time. A problem that began after forceful pulling may involve a bent arm, broken fixing or cracked timber. Tightening every bolt harder is not the answer either: some joints are designed to pivot freely.
Some sofas must be lifted through a particular angle before unfolding; others pull straight out using a handle. Using the wrong sequence can make an otherwise sound mechanism appear stuck. If the usual movement no longer works, the latch does not hold, a spring is displaced or a section suddenly releases, stop using it. Do not dismantle spring-loaded parts or gas struts yourself.
Extra force on a jammed mechanism can bend an arm, tear a fixing out of the frame or rip the upholstery. An unstable, partly opened section may move suddenly and trap a hand. If you see a crack, broken part, sagging on one side or unexpected opening and closing, stop using the bed function and keep children away from the moving parts.
Information about other furniture work is available on the 166 Usta home page. For a sofa bed, the feet, frame and joints need considering alongside the folding mechanism.
Do not spray oil indiscriminately into the mechanism. Not every pivot needs lubrication, and an unsuitable product can stain fabric or collect dirt. Lubricate only the points specified by the manufacturer with the recommended product. Hammering metal straight, removing springs and undoing support bolts are not routine home checks. For a powered model, isolate power as instructed before inspection and do not dismantle the motor assembly.
Prepare an overall photo, the sofa’s brand and model, and a photo of the affected side taken from outside the mechanism. Explain whether it sticks while opening, closing or both, and whether it started after moving the sofa or pulling it forcefully. Mention creaking, metal scraping or looseness. An existing video may help, but do not operate a faulty mechanism again just to record it. The mechanism type and dimensions need checking before choosing a replacement part.
The technician checks for obstructions, uneven movement, loose fixings and frame damage. After inspection, they explain whether adjustment, repair of an attachment point or a compatible replacement part is needed. A jam does not always require an entirely new mechanism; conversely, lubrication will not repair a bent or broken component. Opening, closing, locking and support stability are checked after the work.
If removing an obvious obstruction has not helped, avoid forcing the sofa. To book furniture repair service, call +994 50 274 92 92 or send a request through our contact page. Share a photo and describe the symptoms so we can arrange a suitable inspection time.
