Washing machine not draining: causes and fixes

Your washing machine finishes the cycle but water stays in the drum, or it never moves to the spin stage — it cannot drain normally. This is one of the most common faults, usually caused by a blockage in the drainage system: the filter, the pump, or the drain hose.

Why does the washing machine not drain?

The most frequent causes are: a drain filter clogged with hair, buttons, coins or small objects; a failed drain pump or a foreign object stuck in its impeller; a kinked or blocked drain hose; or a blocked sewage connection. Sometimes the cause is electronic — the control board or the pressure (level) sensor — and the machine never sends the drain command.

If the machine stops with no sound, the issue is more likely electronic or no power to the pump. If you hear the pump humming but no water leaves, a blockage or jammed impeller is more likely.

What can you safely check at home?

Unplug the machine and close the tap. Open the small hatch at the bottom of the front panel and check the drain filter — place a towel and a shallow tray first, as water remains inside. Remove hair, sediment and foreign objects. Then check the drain hose is not kinked and the sewage connection is clear.

What you should NOT do

Do not dismantle the pump or control board, do not pull objects from the impeller with a rough tool, and do not fit a "universal" part. Tilting the machine to force water out can damage the motor and electronics.

The 166 Usta solution

A 166 Usta washing machine technician checks the drainage system step by step: filter, pump impeller, drain hose, level sensor and control circuit, then tests the wash and spin modes to confirm full draining.

What is clarified during diagnosis?

The technician measures whether the pump receives power, whether the impeller turns freely, whether hose and pipes are clear, and whether the board issues the drain command. Replacing the wrong part costs time and money, so this sequence matters.

FAQ

Can I clean the filter myself?

Yes, the drain filter is safe to clean. But if it is clean and water still won't drain, the problem is in the pump or electronics and a technician is needed.

How do I get the laundry out?

Switch off and unplug, slowly open the bottom filter to drain water into a low container, then open the door.

When should I call 166 Usta?

If the filter and hose are clean but water won't drain, or there is a burnt smell or a drain error code, contact a washing machine technician. For deep cleaning after a fault, see 166 Təmizlik, or browse the 166 Usta blog.
