If a refrigerator runs but no longer cools effectively, or the freezer cannot reach the required temperature, a low refrigerant charge may be one possible cause. Refrigerant absorbs heat inside the cabinet and transfers it outside. In a sealed and healthy system, it is not consumed during normal use. A low charge usually means that a leak or a previous repair issue must be investigated.
Poor cooling does not automatically mean that refrigerant is low. A faulty thermostat, temperature sensor, No-Frost fan, defrost system, compressor relay, damaged door gasket or dirty condenser can cause similar symptoms. The refrigerator must be diagnosed before any recharge is considered.

These signs are not conclusive. Temperature, pressure and the general operating condition must be checked before confirming a low charge.
Refrigerant does not normally disappear on its own. It can escape through a very small leak in the pipework, a damaged brazed joint, corrosion in the evaporator, a service tube fault or a compressor connection that has lost its seal. Adding gas without locating the source will allow the same problem to return.
A recharge without leak repair is only temporary. Cooling may improve briefly and then weaken again. The compressor may continue operating for long periods under increased strain. Correct repair should identify why the refrigerant was lost rather than simply add more.
The technician first checks cabinet temperatures, compressor operation, sensors, thermostat, fan, defrost system and door sealing. If a low charge is suspected, the cooling circuit is tested for leaks. The fault is repaired before the system is evacuated with a vacuum pump to remove air and moisture.
The correct refrigerant is then selected from the appliance data label and added in the quantity specified by the manufacturer. Domestic refrigerators may use R600a, R134a or another refrigerant. They are not interchangeable. R600a is flammable and requires specific tools, ventilation and safety procedures.
Too little refrigerant leaves the cooling weak and makes the compressor run for longer. Too much can alter system pressures, overload the compressor and cause unstable performance. Charging must be based on the appliance specification and proper measurements.
After the recharge, the technician checks compressor operation, pipe temperatures, cooling in both compartments, noise, vibration and leak tightness. Reaching the final operating temperature can take several hours depending on the model and starting temperature.
Opening the refrigeration circuit requires measuring equipment, a vacuum pump and correct safety procedures. Selecting the wrong refrigerant, overcharging the system or ignoring a leak can damage the compressor. Flammable refrigerants also create a fire risk.
