When an air conditioner runs but no longer cools as effectively as before, low refrigerant is often suspected. Refrigerant allows the system to absorb heat indoors and release it through the outdoor unit. In a sealed and correctly installed system, refrigerant is not consumed during normal operation. If the level is low, the technician should look for a leak at pipe joints, service valves, coils or other components.
A refrigerant check may be needed when cooling has weakened, the room takes much longer to reach the selected temperature, the indoor unit blows lukewarm air, or ice appears on the pipes or indoor coil. The same symptoms can also be caused by dirty filters, weak airflow, fan faults, sensor problems or compressor issues. Proper diagnosis must therefore come before recharging.

These signs are not a final diagnosis. Pressure, temperature difference, airflow and the overall condition of the system must be assessed together.
If refrigerant escaped through a leak, adding more without repairing the leak only provides a temporary result. The charge will fall again, cooling will weaken and the compressor may operate under excessive strain. A professional service checks likely leak points, repairs the fault where possible and then restores the correct charge.
The technician first inspects the filters, fans, indoor and outdoor coils, pipework and compressor operation. System pressures and operating temperatures are measured, and the refrigerant type specified by the manufacturer is confirmed.
If the circuit has been opened for repair, air and moisture are removed with a vacuum pump. The system is then charged according to the equipment specifications and measured operating conditions. R32, R410A and other refrigerants are not interchangeable. After charging, the technician checks pressure, supply-air temperature, compressor performance and leak tightness.
Overcharging does not improve cooling. It can create excessive pressure, increase compressor load, raise energy consumption and reduce performance. The amount must be based on the manufacturer’s data and proper measurements rather than estimation.
In a sealed system, the refrigerant can remain for many years. An air conditioner does not automatically require a refill every season. If the charge repeatedly becomes low, the source of the leak must be identified. Routine maintenance should focus on filters, coils, drainage, electrical connections and operating performance.
Refrigerants operate under pressure, and improper handling can cause equipment damage, cold burns and other hazards. Refrigerants also have different safety and handling requirements. Leak testing, vacuuming and charging should be performed by a qualified air conditioner technician using the correct equipment.
Arrange an inspection if the air conditioner cools poorly, the pipe freezes, the compressor runs continuously, or a previous recharge lasted only a short time.
